The HIghland Games Park in Bridge of Allan was a superb venue for our Grass track races on Easter Saturday but the poor weather had a detrimental effect on the size of the field. Nevertheless those that did come along to support the event had a great afternoon's racing.
Commentator, Jammy Johnson, kept us moving along with his lively patter and announced the start of the racing with a flying lap for each rider so the handicapping for later racing could be worked out.
The racing was heavy going on the sodden grass, especially for the younger riders but spirits were kept high with Jammy urging the riders on and delicious home bakes in the hut.
We skipped through the programme of races including the block handicap, team pursuit, scratch race, hare and hounds, devil and cat the pigeon.
By the end of the day the sun even managed to warm the riders and steam could be seen evaporating off the wet grass
Even with a massive handicap Kylie Petrie was unstoppable in many of the races, winning 4 out right. The Stirling Bike Club rider was a credit to his club and a great sport as he carried on riding despite the lack of competition, supporting the younger riders in the process.
Calum Fernie from Edinburgh Road Club was also on great form, winning three of his races and second in two.
It was great to see the West Lothian riders taking part, many in their first open race.
The Hare and Hounds and Catch the Pigeon were exciting races to watch, both handicap events but slightly different to the normal format.
In the Hare and Hounds, West Lothian riders Sam Chisholm and Andrew Turner were the hares and give a half a lap advantage on the chasing pack. They almost held off the riders but were caught just before the line and finished 5th and 6th respectively
The Catch the Pigeon race had the riders spaced around the track one behind the other depending on their handicap. Once overtaken a rider drops out until the field has been whittle down and the last remaining rider is the winner.
