A super santa cyclo cross thanks to Team Garmin-Cervelo and Rapha-Condor-Sharp's James McCallum (and of course Santa!)
Chief course designer Ewen Fulton reports on Saturday's racing
To celebrate the end of a fantastic year for the kids club we held our annual Santa Cyclo cross at Kinneil Estate, Bo'ness. What an event! While the wind may have tried to blow us away the rain held off and this year the temperature was into positive digits (only just).
Special guest of honour was Rapha-Condor-Sharp pro rider James McCallum and of course Santa himself.
Before sunrise a band of intrepid coaches and helpers turned up to set up the event. The course was taped out and the catering set up ready for the arrival of the mums and dads and kids
The racing was intense with battles fought right throughout the field in all the events and it was clear how the kids have developed over the year.
James joined in with the racing which thrilled the kids as they got to ride against a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist.
After the racing everyone stocked up on refreshments before the big event – our award ceremony.
But first Santa handed a special gift to every rider - a brand new replica cycling jersey, courtesy of Tour de France pro team Garmin Cervelo.
James then answered the kids' questions and entertained us with tales from his racing career (including the crashes!) and gave advice on how to become a better rider.
Next James presented the awards for the club's 5 race series and the Santa Cyclo Cross. There were also some spot prizes to recognise other achievements including best race face (Andrew Oxley), craziest descender (Alison Bryce) best crash (Ryan Ewing) and best wheelie (Cameron Mason)
Alex Ball was awarded most improved boy, Leah Grant most improved girl and Ryan Ewing Rider of the year
Following the awards the big kids got to play! 16 Clarion members - and Santa - lined for the club’s first senior cyclo cross race and James joined in too. It was clear from their race faces that a few seniors were taking things seriously. After a gruelling half hour the final lap was a relief to some. Riders jockeyed for position right up to the line. A couple of riders rode like trains, while others sounded like a trains!
A massive thank you to everyone for coming along and making a fantastic event. It was great to see so many Clarion members out supporting the day.
Finally a few thank you’s to those who worked so hard to make this a great event
• The Mason family, Alison McQuillan and Kerstin for all their hard work on the catering stand keeping everyone supplied with lovely hot drinks and cakes.
• The coaches and helpers for setting out the course and running the race
• James McCallum from Rapha-Condor-Sharp for coming along and being a great inspiration to the kids
• ProCycling magazine, Bike and Ski Clinic, Muck-Off and Team Garmin Cervelo who donated prizes
• Everyone who baked for the refreshment stand
• All the parents for making the effort and coming along to cheer everyone on.
Hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year and we will see you in 2012!
